New Work 2017 Trees & Ponds
The Trees & Pond series explores the light and atmosphere of wild, open spaces at different times of day, weather, and seasons. It began with a swampy area I pass regularly, and my fascination with the light, reflections in water and patterns of dead tree branches against sky. I paint wet color onto wet paper resulting in color bleeds that are manipulated to suggest mists, reflections in water, distant trees and hills. When dry, more specific trees are painted on top. The new work relates to older bodies of work exploring color fields, ridge tops, clouds and weather patterns. The ponds are imagined places, inspired by the landscapes that surround me, painted through the filter of memory with a desire to celebrate the quiet that these places evoke in me.
